Something serious to think about

Maybe I'm shouting in the dark, but I think that the recent shootings in BC indicate it's time to seriously consider a solution like that found in Portugal, as outlined here:

There is no doubt in my mind that if the resources devoted to dealing with the drug problem as criminal activity were transferred to dealing with it as a health problem we would actually save tax dollars. Also as a resident of BC I see the proliferation of gang activity as a direct consequence of the criminalization of an unfortunate lifestyle choice. The use of marijuana is so widespread that it is in effect decriminalized. The population as a whole does not see its use as criminal. The use of hard drugs becomes in effect self medication for the mentally unstable. We should be looking towards decriminalization as a pragmatic solution. Alcohol abuse and gambling addiction are not criminal. Lets get real. Dave
