NAFTA allows corporations to sue for potential profit

A Canadian company feels that the US denial of the Keystone pipeline might cause it to be less profitable.  It is therefore suing the US for $billions.  Here's the what, why and how:

The ability to sue for the loss of potential profits is at the heart of ALL of the so-called free trade agreements.  Effectively foreign companies can override the wishes of governments, which can have immense negative effects on environmental, health and safety regulations.  The TPP et al turns over to the corporations the traditional powers of governments, but saddles them with none of the responsibilities of government towards the citizenry.  Cute.
